Halloween 2010 is Finally Here!

I can't begin to tell you all how excited I am that I get to go full-scale for our Halloween yard haunt this year.  We built a new home early this year and moved in back in May.  I've been spending the past couple of months starting over with my haunt props as many of my previous gear was left with my kids so they can celebrate while living with their mom.

So, the "big day" is just a week away and I'm finally making enough progress that it's noticable in the yard now.  Still a lot of work to do during this last week, but I feel great that it is coming together well.  My new neighbors simply don't know what to think just yet.  We're in the very back of a very new area, so we're not sure how much actual ToT traffic we'll have next weekend, but I'm working on some flyers to place around the community to hopefully drive a bit of the kiddies this way.

I'll definitely get some photos posted once I have a bit of time at the end of the week or possibly after the treating is over.  Here's a quick list of the things I've had to make and/or update for the yard this year:

  • Installed complete 24-hour DVR surveillance system
  • New haunted signpost
  • All new tombstones
  • All new Monster-in-the-Box prop
  • All new cemetery zombie(s) props
  • All new ground-bursing coffin
  • Updated Bucky's casket with paint and lining
  • Acquired fog machines
  • Acquired a few new small props (crows, vultures, etc.)
  • Grabbed several great items at garage sales, including an antique wheelchair that will make a GREAT prop!

So I guess that's all for my latest update.  I've also updated the "Finding Us" section so you can come check-out the haunt if you happen to be in the area.  Happy haunting and hope you all have a very wonderful 2010 Halloween!

My First Bucky Corpse

Let me start off for those who may not be as familiar with this Halloween haunt stuff as we are.  A "Bucky Bones" is an anatomically correct skeleton that is used in universities and education centers when training students for the medical field.  Pretty much any manufacturing industry may have "issues" from time-to-time in their production line, resulting in a product that doesn't pass their QA standards.  These are commonly referred to as 3rd or 4th quality items.  The same goes for these skeletons used for teaching.  A "Bucky Bones" is more specifically a skeleton that doesn't pass mustard with the company and so they sell them at a discount to those of us who like to go a little nuts on Halloween.

This is my first attempt at "corpsing", so please be kind...but I'm pretty pleased with the results so far and will definitely be doing more of this in the future...although not more for the '08 Halloween season.  Check out some fun and interesting photos in the Fright Photo Gallery for our 2008 Haunt and you'll get the idea pretty quickly.

As an aside, I should pay homage to the website where I got my instructions.  The site Skull and Bone (www.skullandbone.com ) is a fantastic resource and I would like to personally thank the folks over there for sharing their vast amount of information on their technique.  It's my personal favorite of all I have seen on-line, and when you look at my results after just my first try I think you'll all agree...Skull and Bone us top-notch

Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here...

Greetings victims...er...I mean visitors, and welcome to my own personal place of terror on the Internet.  As the years go by and my kids reach their teenage years, I find myself recalling those days of yore when leaves began to fall and the chill in the air made me long for popcorn balls and caramel apples acquired from the many neighbors who kept their porch lights on to the thrill of the local children in masks.  Of course, in those days most of the costumes we wore were of the plastic-face-held-on-with-an-elastic-strap variety.  Not the incredible pieces that are mass produced for todays Trick-or-Treaters.

As my sons grew older we slowly began to migrate away from the cute-looking self-made scarecrow that sat on a bale of hay in the front yard.  And now we're on to more gruesome and frightful displays.  The size of our Halloween display is now on-par, and nearly exceeds, our Christmas display.  I anxiously await the month of October and begin littering my house and garage with creepy, crawly props and decor as we enter the first week in September each year.  Lucky for me, my wife Dena has come around and now really enjoys the family fun that is building our annual yard-haunt.

We really began having serious fun when I stumbled across a few other amazing websites that were full of information on building your own tombstones, fences, monsters, and corpses.  You can check-out most of them yourself in my Links section.  And here I am now, a full-fledged Halloween fanatic.  This is definitely my favorite time of year...when the moon is full...and the fall wind begins to pick-up.  Aaah, I can hear the Halloween theme song in the background just thinking about it!

Anyway, I don't know what I really intend to contribute to the world with the creation of this site, only that I wanted a fun place where I could present my family Halloween funfest to all the others out there with similar interests.  And finally, to say a very warm, heart-felt thank you to all those who came before me and have spend so many hours of their own time not only building props, but documenting the process for the rest of us to learn from.

Ok, enough of my ramblings.  Take a look around and let the horror ensue....
